Assisted Areas

During 2006, the Government announced the review of Assisted Areas in response to new European Commission guidelines on regional aid. Stage 1 – Identifying Criteria, was launched in February, and ran until 19 April. This looked at the definition, indicators and coverage for Assisted Areas and posed a number of key questions for respondents to consider.

The responses received following Stage 1 have been reviewed by the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and a draft Assisted Areas map was produced. This map formed the basis of Stage 2 of the consultation.

On 10 October 2006, the Government published its response to the Assisted Areas public consultation. The map was formally approved by the European Commission on 20 December 2006.

You can view the Commission Decision on the European Commission website.

Details of the consultation can be accessed on the BERR website

The revised map became operational on 1 January 2007, and highlights the designation of Assisted Areas from 2007 to 2013.
