Crawley: fit for the future

Michael Coughlin, Chief Executive of Crawley Borough Council, gives an insight into putting Crawley at the heart of a world class South-East region.

Crawley, the ‘new town on the block’, is coming of age. For many years, its reputation was shaped more by its new town status than its economic muscle, strong community and contribution to the quality of life of the region.

It is a youthful, dynamic and forward-looking town, where public, voluntary and private sectors work together to transform the town, making it ‘fit for the future’.

At the heart of the Gatwick Diamond sub-region, its strategic location is unparalleled in the South East.  Close proximity to major road, rail and air transport links put city, coast, countryside and northern Europe in easy reach.

This is no heaven on earth, though. The town has huge advantages, but is also tackling some daunting challenges.
